For lovers of Italian culture, history, food and wine, Rome and the surrounding countryside is a great vacation destination. Travel and tour at your own pace while living in a “Casale” – farmhouse surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Take a cooking class or visit local wineries with our home chef and sommelier friends. Shop butchers and bakeries or the slow food way at outdoor farmers markets featuring fresh seasonal vegetables and fruit, cheeses & honey. Let us help you create a custom stay with unique day trips and activities. The itineraries below suggest the possibilities and can be arranged as “all-inclusive” packages for groups of 6 – 8 people.

 Itineraries Designed for Different Seasons:

Nemi, Lazio

Spring is when the flowers are blooming and the vegetables are plentiful in the markets. The versatile artichoke are a staple of Roman cuisine and are served up in the restaurants. Carciofi alla Giudia (artichokes Jewish style) when fried to their delectable crispy-ness with great extra virgin olive oil are not to be missed.                                                           

Gardens & Ghettos – 9 Nights

Thursday – Morning arrival in Rome where your group will be met the driver with van who will transport the group to Casale Sonnino. Settle into rooms and relax. Welcome lunch at Casale. Meet your host George Treves, learn history of the “Casale”.  Visit Monte Porzio Catone and a local winery, Wine on the terrace and pizza at the pizzeria next door across the vineyard.

Friday – Visit Ostia Antica, the ancient seaport of Rome, which is now 10 miles inland, was rediscovered in 1909, and is a true archeological wonder.  It dates back to the 4C BC and shows much of the town as it existed in those days with incredible floor murals in front of many of the shops, baths and homes. Late afternoon tea in Frascati. Dinner nearby at Osteria il Bersagliere in Colonna – featuring Carciofi alla Giudia

Saturday – Rome Tour with Art and Antiquities Historian. Borghese Gallery and walking tour to Piazza Navona, historic center. Lunch near Rome Campo Di Fiori. Dinner at the Casale.

Sunday – Day trip to Garden of Ninfa, a romantic storybook garden with 1300 plant species growing among the ruins of a medieval village. Lunch in Norma. Late Dinner at a restaurant near the Casale

Monday – Tour of the Alban Hills, our neighborhood: Castel Gandolfo and Lago Albano, Nemi for Lunch, Ariccia, Grottaferrata. Dinner at Casale.

Tuesday – Day Trip to Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio, Trevignano Romano and Lago Bracciano at sunset.

Wednesday – Jewish Rome with Art and Antiquities Historian. Synagogue, Jewish Museum, Ghetto history from yesterday to today. Or this day can have a Christian focus with visit to St. Peters, Vatican Museum, Sistine Chapel. Lunch and Dinner in Rome.

Thursday – Visit Tivoli Gardens & Villa D’Este. Lunch at “Oliveto” in Cineto Romano. Drive tour Lazio Countryside. Dinner in Monte Porzio.

Friday – Market & Cooking Day with Jo Wennerholm, local home chef. Morning at market, cheese maker, butcher. Light Lunch out. Rest, pack or take a walk into Monte Porzio. At 4:30, Jo arrives with food and the cooking class commences. Eat what you cooked at the Casale.

Saturday – Depart the Casale taking along your memories

 

Lago Albano, Castel Gandolfo

Summer is a great time to travel with friends and family and be together in your own home. This itinerary includes three nights in Umbria and focuses on great food, wine and favorite destinations.  Since it can be very hot, there is time to spend at the beach or the Lake for swimming and paddle boating.

Delicious Lazio and Umbria – 9 Nights

Meet your host George Treves, learn history of the “Casale” and tour the caves below.  Drive Tour of the Castelli Romani with stops in Castel Gandolfo and Nemi. Dinner in Frascati.

Saturday – Day in Rome with Tour Guide – Sites chosen by group. Dinner at “Roma Sparita”, Trastevere

Sunday – Tivoli Gardens & Villa D’Este, Lunch at “Oliveto” in Cineto Romano. Subiaco and sacred grotto and Benadictine Monesteries or Lazio drive tour. Pizza at restaurant near Casale

Monday –Market & Cooking Day with Jo Wennerholm, local home chef. Morning at market, cheese maker, butcher. Light Lunch out. Afternoon rest or walk into Monte Porzio. At 4:30, Jo arrives with food and the cooking class begins. Dinner at the Casale. Or instead of Cooking Day, can take a day trip to the Beach at Sperlonga.

Tuesday – Trip to Umbria: Drive and Lunch in Orvieto. Afternoon Arrive at Umbrian Agriturismo.

Wednesday – Trip to Pienza, Montepulciano & Val D’Orcia or TBD

Thursday– Trip to Deruta, Perugia, Gubbio or TBD. These towns are famous for their ceramics “majolica”

Friday – Leave Umbria Agriturismo in the morning and arrive at the Casale by 12:00. Spend the afternoon as you wish locally or go into Rome.

Saturday – Depart the Casale and take home your memories

 

Olive Harvest, Casale Sonnino

Fall is harvest time in Italy. There are vegetables aplenty and of course grape picking and olive gathering in October. The timing of farm activities depends on the weather and the whims of mother nature throughout the year. A 7- night stay can draw from any of the custom itineraries already mentioned or can be easily developed to include your interests.

A Taste of Lazio – 7 Nights

Saturday – Morning arrival in Rome where your group will be met the driver with van who will transport the group to Casale Sonnino. Welcome brunch at the Casale. If harvest time, visit the crew in the vineyard. Afternoon Drive Tour of the Castelli Romani with stops in Castel Gandolfo, Frascati and dinner in Nemi.

Sunday – Visit Ostia Antica, the ancient seaport of Rome, which is now 10 miles inland, was rediscovered in 1909, and is a true archeological wonder.  It dates back to the 4C BC and shows much of the town as it existed in those days with incredible floor murals in front of many of the shops, baths and homes. Dinner on the coast in Santa Marinella.

Monday – Day in Rome with Guide – Sites chosen by group. Dinner in Trastevere

Tuesday – Drive Tour of Lazio villages and landscapes. Lunch at a Michelin star restaurant in Ottaviano Romano.

Wednesday – Trip to San Felice Circeo and the Beach at Sperlonga. Sample fresh mozzarella di bufala and enjoy fresh seafood on the coast.

Thursday – Depending if harvest: Morning at Casale, afternoon at cheese producer or vegetable farm. Or Rome or Nature Walk. Visit to the olive mill or winery TBD.

Friday – Cooking Day with Jo. Morning at market. Lunch on the run or sandwiches at Casale. Rest or walk into Monte Porzio. At 4:30, Jo arrives with food and the cooking and baking begins. Learn how to make fresh pasta. Final dinner at the Casale.

Saturday – Depart from the Casale and take home your memories
